PROJECT: PSA CENTENNARY BANNER DESIGN.
APRIL 2013.
Laser-cut, machine-stitched, appliquéd leather on acrylic canvas, approx. 1800 x 1800mm.
In the spirit of trade union banners in New Zealand and internationally, the PSA commissioned a large scale contemporary textile banner to mark its 100th birthday in 2013.
ABOUT THE BANNER: The PSA banner design references historical union banners both visually – ornate borders, crests, scrolls, use of imagery – and through the process of appliqué. The imagery selected aims to represent the wide range of public service roles of PSA members – both traditional and more current – uniting them into one collective design. The flora and fauna firmly ground the design within a New Zealand context, with a strong Pacific feel.
The design intends to evoke a sense of strength, pride and identity through its bold and effective use of colour, strong silhouettes and combining of everyday, familiar imagery. A feeling of trusted tradition is communicated through the outwardly classic 'damask' / crest appearance, yet the addition of 'tools of the trade' aims to shift it into a more contemporary, relevant arena.
The design on the reverse – visible by participants following in a procession – pulls selected symbolic elements from the front design for graphic impact.
The banner design aims to simultaneously pay respect to the past, and acknowledge the present, whilst looking forward to the next 100 years of the PSA.
